Children Helping Poor and Homeless People is a non-profit organization that reaches out to those who are homeless and less fortunate. Their mission is to help end poverty and homelessness. Their shortterm goal is to build a center where children can volunteer to help after school. In 1999, CHPHP won the President's Service Award, and in 2001, they won the Daily Points of Light Award. They help approximately 25,000 people a year and involve about 15,000 peoplein their mission. Not only does CHPHP help the poor and the homeless, but they also help educate children about homelessness. CHPHP began in 1986, when founders Crissy and Patrick Schanes were just children. Their mother Christine and her husband lived in Venice. Every day, homeless people would walk from the beach to the park, and then back. One day, Christine went out and gave a blanket to a homeless person. That day, when she went back to her house, Christine told her family about what had happened and how frightened she was. Her daughter Crissy told her, "Mom, I can do that." And that's how it started. Their friends told their school and their school told other schools-before they knew it, CHPHP had begun.Children Helping Poor and Homeless People is dedicated to helping children and it's for "children of all ages." Anyone can donate money or help out at the front line by making lunches, giving out blankets, or helping with other services. You can reach them by telephone or personal visit. CHPHP needs your help!
