Bookends is a non-profit organization that runs book drives to connect two schools, one to donate books and one to receive them. Bookends is a unique organization because of its focus on getting the students involved and not just the teachers and parents. Bookends was founded by an 8-year-old boy with a yearning to help his community. Nearly every idea and step is student-produced, creating an excitement and interest for community service in younger children. Bookends has just launched its new Youth Board which is made up of a group of students dedicated to Bookends. The members have all been previously involved in a Bookends book drive and have a continuing desire to work towards literacy and making books more available. The Youth Board has just completed its first book drive with the donations going to The Children's Courthouse in Monterey Park. I have been involved with Bookends for about three years and currently serve as the student representative on the Bookends Board and the co-president of the Youth Board. Overall, Bookends is an incredible organization that continues to take steps towards defeating illiteracy as well as introducing community service to youth. I am so proud and grateful that a good portion of my youth, so far, has been involved in a form of community service.
