Emma B., 12th grade, Berkeley CA New Global Citizens Team Leader

Although South Africa is better off economically than most other African countries, over 20% of its residents between the ages of 15 and 49 are HIV-infected. FXB South Africa offers after-school programs to youth, many whose parents are sick or have died from AIDS, in the townships surrounding Johannesburg. The money raised for FXB will help children to lead projects raising awareness about HIV/AIDS, rape, and domestic abuse and acceptance of orphaned youth. We chose to raise funds for this program because we recognize that without breaking the stigma surrounding HIV-related issues, communities cannot come together to fight the epidemic; education is imperative to stopping AIDS. It is also important to us that children of HIV/AIDS infected parents do not feel, as well as the sick themselves, feel supported, rather than isolated. We love working with an organization made up of people who actually live in the afflicted areas, and therefore have the best ideas of what the biggest issues are and how they can be fixed.
