The Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group in India addresses the issue of child labor in waste picking communities, and the health hazards of this practice. This organization is unique because not only does it talk to the children, but it talks to the junk dealers who ultimately drive this trade, thus their impact on the issue becomes greater and more effective. Their program offers education on a flexible schedule and health care services to all of the working children in the junk yards, and ensures safe disposal and recycling of all of the trash. This project touches on a variety of issues that we care about. We feel very strongly that child labor is a highly undesirable state that comes as an outgrowth of poverty, and it must be eradicated to end the cycle of poverty in depressed areas. Furthermore, there is an urgent need for greater health services for children who live or work in dangerous conditions. Lastly, as members of the global community, we support the fight to decrease humanity's negative effects on our environment. We believe that our work will help to alleviate the symptoms of these problems, while searching for solutions to the underlying causes.
