Youth Action International was founded by Kimmie Weeks, a survivor of the Liberian civil war, in 2002. This grassroots organization develops programs that work to rehabilitate children who have suffered from wartime violence. Their Agricultural Project for Former Child Soldiers in Monrovia, Liberia provides counseling, education, job opportunities, and more in order to give children an opportunity to heal and reach their full potential. In our sophomore year, we started the K.N.O.W. club (Knowledge Now Opens Worlds) in order to create an environment where we could discuss and research current global issues. We learned about Youth Action International through our club work with New Global Citizens, and were shocked to learn that Liberia’s last civil war killed approximately 400,000 people and displaced over 2 million. Both warring factions recruited children who often fought at the forefront of the battle. Our club had already discussed and researched the issue of child soldiers, and so when we presented this project to our club they thought it was an immediate fit. We are passionate about this issue, and have dedicated our year to spreading awareness and fundraising to help give these children a second chance. Please join us in helping raise funds to help these former child soldiers
