The Center for Women in Sierra Leone, an organization that establishes safe and healthy environments for women and their children by providing for their core needs and developing new community infrastructure. We chose to support the Center for Women in Sierra Leone. Many women in Sierra Leone are living in extremely vulnerable conditions after a decade of civil war that finally ended in 2002. Due to the war, 160,000 school-aged girls remain out of school, the poverty rate for women is extremely high, and more women are turning to prostitution to survive. The Center helps women in Sierra Leone become self-sustainable through basic education, alternative counseling, vocational training, and micro-credit loans. It also provides a day care service so that women do not have to worry about childcare as they visit the center. Furthermore, along with its programs, the center works on influencing government policy that will be positive towards women and bridge the gender, educational, political, and economic gap. In recent years, much public attention has turned to Sierra Leone. Ever since deciding to support this project, we have put much effort into raising money for and increasing awareness about the injustices in Sierra Leone, and we hope to continue this mission and strengthen our relationship with the organization in the years to come.
