"It's not just about empowering the girls who are studentsâit's about changing a whole village." This is what we learned about the Uganda Rural Development and Training Program's award-winning Girls' School, located in western Uganda. Founded in 2000, the residential school provides free education to 240 talented, poor young women in middle and high school. The school employs an exciting "two generation approach" to learning. Students take their new knowledge back home to their families and help them to design collaborative projects to accomplish the family's agreed-upon goals. They may involve health, food, business plans, or home improvements. This partnership between the parents and the school sets the Girls' School apart from more traditional schools. Its organic farm, educational radio station, and parent workshops ensure that the whole village benefits. In their drama classes, students design and perform plays that provide consciousness-raising among local residents about subjects from malaria prevention to womenâs rights. Our families here can help by fundraising for stage lighting and a curtain for their new multi-purpose hall.
