Throughout Argentina, many families are poor. Mothers go to work and have no place to leave their children. Many homes do not even have a table or pencils and paper. Schools do not have playgrounds. Thirteen years ago, Andrea Hewitt and a friend started a free preschool to help these poor children. Their school was called Children's Island. At the beginning, there was just one preschool that served seven children. Now there are two centers serving 90 preschool and schoolage children. The centers provide good food to children who would otherwise go hungry. They help young children learn basic skills (such as drawing and counting), and provide homework help and needed school materials to older children. The children at the centers are happy, healthy, and productive. Andrea would like to increase the number of children that the centers can serve. She would like to be able to help the children pay for further schooling and for needed medical care. We can help. We can hold fundraisers to help kids at these centers buy books, backpacks, and food. We can collect games and other equipment to send to the children. We can spread the word about Children's Island by selling their holiday cards to friends. We can also help by simply telling our family and friends. We can be a huge help just by showing we care.
